Ludhiana: CIA-I of Ludhiana police commissionerate busted a gang placing bets on cricket matches. Police said even if someone won a bet, the accused did not give him money and changed their address and contact.
The accused — identified as Gaurav Kumar and Ashish Lekho of Pindi Street — were arrested from a house in Mayur Vihar on Humbran road where they were betting on a cricket match.
Additional deputy commissioner of police (investigation) Rupinder Kaur Sra said the police got information about the accused who have been betting on cricket matches for the past at least seven years. The accused would purchase SIM cards on identity proofs of some other persons and use those mobile numbers for betting. The probe also found that the people whose IDs have been used had no idea how their IDs reached the accused.
“The police arrested the accused from a house in Mayur Vihar where they were placing bets on a cricket match between Pakistan’s Peshawar and Rawalpindi teams. The police arrested the accused and recovered Rs 53,200 in cash, one LED TV, two laptops and 11 mobile phones from their possession,” Sra said.
A case under Sections 420 (Punishment for cheating), 465 (forgery), 467, 468, 471 (Using as genuine a forged document or electronic record) and relevant sections under the Gambling Act has been lodged. tnn
