Album of the Week: Ed Sheeran will be singing out loud again as the British troubadour releases “Autumn Variations” (Gingerbread Man), his second album of the year and his first to not have a mathematic symbol as its title. Coming five months after the chart-topping “-,” “Autumn Variations” features 14 new songs produced by The Nationals’ Aaron Dessner, who he also worked with on “-.” The new set, Sheeran says, was conceptually inspired by Sir Edgar William Elgar’s late 19th century “Enigma Variations” and its 14 compositions, each about one of his friends.
