Former Milwaukee Brewers Catcher Stretchered Off Playing Field After Serious Head Injury

Published

on

A pair of former Milwaukee Brewers were involved in a serious injury on Friday, May 31.  Catcher Payton Henry, currently a member of the Toronto Blue Jays, was stretchered off the playing field after Pablo Reyes, currently of the New York Mets organization, accidentally struck the back of Henry’s head during his back swing.

Payton Henry was stretched off the playing field after sustaining a blow to the back of his head.

During the seventh inning of a Buffalo Bison and Syracuse Mets Triple-A game Payton Henry was hit in the back of the head during the back swing from Pablo Reyes.  Henry was treated on site by the medical staff and was carted off the field via stretcher.  The game did not resume following this scary incident and was deemed over.

Following these events Payton Henry was taken to a Syracuse area hospital.  Later on the Toronto Blue Jays and Buffalo Bison issued a statement indicating that he was alert and appropriately responsive.

“Payton Henry has been taken to a Syracuse area hospital where he is being evaluated.  Payton is currently alert and appropriately responsive.  We will share any further information as it becomes available.”

Payton Henry and Pablo Reyes are both former big leaguers with the Brewers.  Henry was drafted by Milwaukee in 2016, traded at the 2021 deadline for RHP John Curtiss, and then was re-acquired by the Brew Crew during a November trade in 2022.  He elected free agency after the 2023 season and signed with the Blue Jays on a minor league deal.

Pablo Reyes was with the Brewers during the 2021 and 2022 seasons.  Him and Henry were teammates during that time.  After the 2022 season Reyes spent time in the Oakland Athletics and Boston Red Sox organizations before being traded to the New York Mets at the end of May 2024.

No further update has been provided since the alert and appropriately responsive statement from the Blue Jays and Bison.
