You’re born under a lucky star if you hit a jackpot of $1 million, and that too at the Dubai Duty-Free (DDF). Payal, 42, received cash from her husband as a wedding anniversary girl in April. She bought a raffle draw ticket online, which gifted her $1 million (approximately Rs 8.3 crore) on May 16, becoming the 229th Indian to win the Millennium Millionaire promotion.

Payal won the whopping prize at DDF Millennium Millionaire series 461 with ticket number 3337. She has been buying DDF tickets for the last 12 years and bought them alternating the names on the tickets with her husband’s or children’s names.

“I used to buy DDF once or twice every year at the airport but I took exception last time when, for the first time, I bought ticket online,” she shared, joyfully adding: “It was a gift that kept on giving — the cash gift from husband made us a millionaire,” Payal told Khaleej Times.

Payal, who hails from Punjab, was in disbelief when DDF organisers shared the news. She plans to spend the money on her children’s future and help her brother. “I would also like to help my brother, who is in Australia, and do some charity work within our Punjabi community. Thank you, Dubai Duty-Free, for fulfilling my dream of winning your promotion. This will go a long way,” she said.

On April 10, a 48-year-old English woman also won $1 million in a series 460 draw with the ticket she bought on her way to Bahrain. An Emirati won a Mercedes Benz SL55 car with a ticket he bought online. A Saudi Arabia-based man and an Indian-origin man earlier won a Range Rover Sport Dynamic HSE P400 and an Aprilia Tuono V4 Factory motorbike respectively.
